  1. Day 1 New Delhi

    – Board a  HRTC Volvo bus from ISBT Kashmiri Gate, New Delhi to Manali at 20:00HRS.

  2. Day 2 Manali

    – Reach Manali by 09:00 HRS, check into guest house near Old Manali.

    – Post lunch visit the hot spring village of Vashist or spend time chilling in Old Manali.

  3. Day 3 Keylong

    – Leave early in the morning by local bus to cross the world famous Rothang Pass and the reach the town of Keylong. (118 km = 6-8 hours)

    – Spend night in a guest house.

  4. Day 4 Leh

    – Take the early morning bus for Leh. (375 km = 12-14 hours)

    – Reach Leh post afternoon and check into a home stay accommodation.

    – Spend rest of the evening relaxing or wander through the lanes of Leh.

  5. Day 5 Leh

    – After breakfast, leave for local site seeing around Leh.

    – Visit the monasteries of Shey Thiksey Hemis.

    – Return back to the guest house around 18:00 HRS.

  6. Day 6 Hunder

    – Leave early in the morning to visit the villages of Hunder and Diskit in Nubra Valley via Khardung La. (The highest motorable road in the world, 18,380 ft)

    – Reach Hunder, post lunch and check into a guest house. (128 km = 4-6 hours)

    – Visit the sand dunes in Diskit and later visit Diskit Monastery.

    – Return back to the guest house in Hunder by 18:00 HRS.

  7. Day 7 Tangse

    – Post breakfast leave for a 167km five hour drive to the beautiful Pangong Tso.

    – Reach Pangong Tso post lunch.

    – Check into our home stay at Tangse for the night.

    – Spend the rest of the evening at leisure chilling by the lake.

  8. Day 8 Leh

    – After breakfast, pack up and return back to Leh by crossing Chang La pass.

    – Reach Leh post noon and check into the home stay.

    – Spend rest of the evening in Leh wandering the streets or unwind at the home stay.

  9. Day 9 Keylong

    – Board the early morning bus back to Keylong.

    – Reach Keylong by 17:00 HRS.

    – Spend night in a guest house.

  10. Day 10 Manali/New Delhi

    – Board the early morning bus to Manali via Rothang Pass.

    – Reach Manali by 11:00 HRS. Board a local HRTC Volvo bus from Manali to New Delhi at around 17:30 HRS.

    – Reach New Delhi by 09:00 HRS.

Essentials to carry

For a minimum of one week to a maximum of three week stay or more to the highest mountain range in the world—the Himalayas, here are a few must haves.

Travelling gear:

  • A rucksack of a minimum 60L.(mandatory{No other kind of bag will be allowed on the trip}
  • A day pack to move around with ease.(must have)
  • A camera with a minimum of 8GB, a spare battery s good to carry along.(optional)
  • Sleeping bag. (If camping is in the blueprint)
  • Carrying a one liter water bottle along is a great thing for every person who hits the road in the Himalayas.(must have)
  • A backpack rain cover.(optional)
  • Hiking Pole. (optional)

Clothing:

  • One cotton long sleeves and two short sleeve T-shirts or shirts. Avoid carrying new T-shirts as clothes get faded easily there.
  • Two short pants and two long pants. Cargo pants are favorable due to multiple pockets and their quick dry quality. Please avoid carrying jeans.
  • Four sets of undergarments and three sets of socks. Please avoid white socks.
  • One thick sweatshirt.(must have)
  • Gloves are optional and can be purchased there as well in case the need arises.(optional)
  • UV protected sun glares. (must have)
  • Cap
  • A half towel is preferred to a full size one as it saves on space in the bag pack.
  • A pair of shoes that are comfortable and have a good grip. Anklets are preferable.(must have)
  • Slippers or flip-flops.(must have)
  • Rain sheet.(can be purchased on the trip)

Personal:

  • Toothpaste, toothbrush, soap bars, shampoo sachets or small bottles of shampoo.
  • Toilet roll.(must have)
  • Paper soap, hand sanitizer, detergent soap sachets.
  • Sun screen with a minimum of 40 SPF, lip balm and cold cream should be carried along.(must have)
  • Body sprays are also good, but glass bottled perfumes are better kept at home.
  • Two thin bed-sheets.(must have)

Accessories:

  • Power board to charge multiple gadgets is a must as most lodging and boarding places have only one plug point.(must have)
  • A 3 meter nylon rope proves to be very handy as it can be used to dry clothes and to tie things along the way.(optional)
  • A LED torch and a box of candles along with a lighter is a safe carry along choice as the lights tend to go out rather often in the Himalayas.(must have)
  • Ten garbage bags to carry dirty clothes while travelling is good to have. These also help to junk the trash and keep the natural setting clean and green.(must have)
  • A small knife while on the road is a safety measure that is advised.(optional)
  • 10,000mah power bank. (Must have)

Medical:

  • Glucose powder.(must have)
  • Tablets for headaches, diarrhea, motion and altitude sickness.
  • Bandage.
  • Cotton.
  • Aspirin.
  • Medication for rashes.
  • Carrying at least 20 cold and throat relief lozenges proves to be a boon on the trip.(must have)
  • Sprain relief plasters.
  • Any personal medication that you have been advised by your doctor.(must have)

Yes, Ladakh is an extremely safe place to travel to. Unlike the rest of J&K, Ladakh has not been affected by any kind of conflict till date.

Yes, there is cell phone coverage in Ladakh. BSNL, Airtel and Vodafone postpaid connection work. BSNL and Airtel are the best. Only postpaid connections work in Ladakh.

As of October 2017, Ladakh had only edge and edge plus (2G) in the town of Leh. So basically WhatsApp works. BSNL has the best data coverage in Ladakh.

Only BSNL has a cellular connection in these regions and that too is very scratchy.

The trip starts at ISBT Kashmiri Gate New Delhi bus station.

Around 60 minutes prior to the departure of the bus is a good time to reach ISBT Kashmiri Gate.

-From the airport take a direct AC bus which leaves every 30 minutes. Good options if you want to avoid the metro rush.
-Take a shuttle bus to the airport metro and then an express metro to New Delhi and finally take the yellow line to Kashmiri Gate. (Fastest way to reach ISBT)

In Manali, Leh and Srinagar you’ll get everything from pizza to dosa. While in other regions, it’s the basic rajma dal (kidney beans) rice, pickle, mix vegetables and rotis with some local chicken curry.

The only way to avoid altitude sickness is to rest well, keep yourself hydrated and have plenty of water.

The oxygen is indeed very thin in Ladakh but if you remember to keep yourself hydrated with small sips of water, it should not bother you.

Since Ladakh is a vast desert, the ILP is needed to help keep a track of travelers. So if lost, tracking the person will be a little easier.
