Seven reasons to backpack to a beach destination
The Indian coast is distributed along nine states, two union territories and two islands. With a coastline that stretches over a distance of 7516.6 km, there are numerous locations you can backpack to.
Here are seven reasons why you should choose a beach destination:
1. All the seafood you can eat
With seafood being the staple diet of coastal locations, you can tantalise your taste buds with the freshest and tastiest seafood available. The exotic cuisine of the coast is not only extremely delicious, but rich in proteins and nutrients and hence provides a healthy meal. One could try the Kanava roast (squid roast) in Kerala, the Shorshe Ilish (smoked hilsa fish with mustard-seed paste) or the Sungta Ambat (a coconut based prawn curry) in Goa and the Prawn pizzan at Kulde beach in Gokarna, Karnataka.
2. Have an adventure with water sports
Beach destinations in India provide a vast array of watersports such as water rafting, parasailing, windsurfing, and jet skiing and even fishing! The waters that surround the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are home to one of the richest coral ecosystems on Earth. Scuba diving allows you the experience the beauty of this unique ecosystem.
3. Sun, sand and the endless sea
Some scientists propose that all life began from the sea. So lay back on the shore and absorb the splendor of our origins. Evenings on the beach provide the perfect opportunity to watch the sun kiss the seas at the horizon. Beach destinations will truly leave you with scenic memories for a lifetime.
4. A chance to experience culture, tradition and diversity
Beach destinations have more to offer than just sand and sea. You can experience the diverse language and traditions of these locations by mingling with its native people.
These locations are also abundant in monument, temples and museums worth visiting. The Basilica of Bom Jesus in Goa contains the mortal remains of St. Francis Xavier and it is also known for The Tamdi Surla Temple, a 12th century Shaivite temple and the oldest temple in Goa.
Kerala is known for its Dutch Palace which contains some of India’s best mythological murals. The Nagina Masjid or The Jewel Fort built by Shah Jahan in Gujarat is another location worth checking out.
5. A chance to be one with nature
Coastal ecosystems are rich in wildlife. You can view a variety of birds flying over the seas right from crows to gulls and darters. You may also be lucky enough to see dolphins jump in and out of the waters.
Gahirmatha Beach in Odisha is the world’s most important beach for the endangered Olive Ridley Sea Turtles who lay their eggs here. Besides Odisha, you can view their nesting grounds on beaches such as Morjim and Agonda in Goa. Mangroves and Palm trees provide a much needed break from the usual scenes of cities’ concrete jungles.
6. A chance to relive your childhood
Few places provide you the chance to go back in time. You can splash about in the water, hunt for seashells, write messages in the sand, build sand castles and make sand angels – at the beach, there’s no need to act your age. Just get down in the sand and start being as creative as a child.
7. A fantastic retreat
Say goodbye to office deadlines and work stress, and enjoy the serenity of the sea. A trip to the beach could the perfect break you need from the nuances of daily life.
